House Update 1.29.2011 (Day 348)

Yes, in 17 days, we will have been working on building the house for a full year. We actually had to renew our building permits this week! But, much progress is being made! We've had a lot of help lately - Jerry (my dad's best and oldest friend) was visiting from AZ and he helped sand all the interior trim boards last week! And this weekend, Papa Stenger is here again to help hang doors and start on the treads for the staircase - and many other odds and ends with details. We have been so blessed to have so many friends and family members help us on this process! They say it takes a village to raise a child, but they obviously forgot that it takes a village to build a house, and we are so lucky!! Here's a few photos of the details. I hope to take more photos tomorrow when more work is done.
Karmann on the rear deck - she's almost 36" tall...
Back patio pavers are in...
Detail of the downstairs light fixtures - these turned out to be PERFECT!
Jerry came all the way from Phoenix to help sand the interior trim boards!
Karmann and Grandpa playing around in the kitchen
Kris installing one of the ceiling fans in dining area
My much anticipated sink and faucet!!
Rear deck railings are up!
Interior upstairs floors are cork (this is our bedroom)
Front deck railings are up!
Also going on....pavers for driveway ribbons are in, ground floor concrete slab is polished, upstairs bathroom tile is going in, light fixtures and door hardware are on order. Still trying to decide what color to paint the exterior....have a great weekend!

Hives Hives, and more Hives

Though this blog is mostly about Karmann and the house, I am making a note about something that happened to me this time...something I will never forget and will hope to never repeat!! As I mentioned, I was sick with a terrible cough that I caught in Illinois. I finally went to the clinic (dr's office was closed over the new year holiday) and was prescribed amoxicillin. I was also experiencing a pain in my side, just under my ribcage - as if a grapefruit was stuck in my side when I moved or laid on that side. I did go to my doctor about that, and we determined that it was muscular - from coughing so hard - I pulled the muscles in my rib cage! So I continued to take the amoxicillin and cough medicine for the full 10 days. The NEXT day, i started to itch in the evening, but didn't think anything about it. The next morning (Thursday), I had a little bit of a rash on my wrists and arms, but nothing crazy. By 3 pm, while at work, I had a full-blown rash break-out all over my arms, thighs, back, belly, and armpits!!! No shortness of breath, but a panic to find Benydril! Finally after about an hour search, I found some and was a little bit relieved. Little did I know, that was just the beginning! So I went home that night and called the doctor's nurse, my mother in law who's a professor in nursing, my sister in law who is an ER nurse, and the consensus was that I was reacting to the medicine. Though, I had been on it for 10 days and no problems! The only other option was that the virus that I had was exposing itself at the end of the cycle. Regardless, benedryl and caladryl lotion became my best friends - as the itching was driving me crazy! The rash subsided over the weekend, but I was still getting new break-outs. Finally, today - almost a week later - I didn't take any benedryl. My feet and hands have been itching these last few days, but the huge hives all over my body are gone - thank goodness!!!

Two year check up (finally!)

So as I was just talking to myself in my head, I was searching for the two-year check-up report papers from Karmann's doctor. I was reminding myself that I was doing this same thing a few days ago when I thought I was going to get around to updating this blog - and the same thing was happening - I couldn't find it in this mess!! In case everyone forgot (including myself!) we are about 6 weeks away from getting a certificate of occupancy at the house! And therefore hoping to MOVE into it around the same time. Well, in the mean time, a lot of the stuff for the new house is currently sitting in our condo. For example, the toilets (in boxes) are next to the couch in the living room. And my BEAUTIFUL refrigerator has been living in my dining room since MAY - yes, that's almost been 9 months now. And, keep in mind, too, that we have a 2-year old and all her stuff. Which includes the latest things that Santa brought for Christmas! So, as you can imagine, this place is a disaster. By Friday night, I don't feel like picking up one more thing, or cleaning the floor again, though I usually end up doing the cleaning right before I go to bed, because I'll realize tomorrow is the weekend, and we will be busy the whole time, so I know if I don't do it now, it won't get done!
Any who. Back to the topic....since I finally found it after about 5 minutes...
On January 3rd, Karmann had her 2-year check up. We waited till after the holidays so she wouldn't be cranky over the trip after getting her shots. So after all the awesome holiday meals, she turned out to weigh 24 lbs. 4 oz. (naked) and was 34" tall! Dr. Coffman estimated her height to be around 5'-8" as an adult. So, hopefully she will be about my height. Though, with the Stenger side genes, she could be as short as 5'-6" (which is still tall for a Stenger girl :)
She is still walking on her tippy-toes, though not all the time, but we are keeping an eye on that. I just see it as a tell-tale sign that she is meant to be a ballerina! All other parts are normal. She and I were a little under the weather - me more than her - with a terrible cough that I caught up in Illinois. I'll fill you in on that story in a moment. So the first week of Jan she was ok, and then last week was the MLK holiday, and she caught a cold again and missed 2 days of daycare. She didn't mind, as Grandpa Hare came down for the rescue! He watched Karmann for most of the day she was out. She only had a low-grade fever of 99.4 +/- and was having a great time with him all day! They definitely bonded because she now can say "Grandpa" and gets very excited when he comes to see her! It is too cute!
Jumping to last night, Uncle Brian is visiting Orlando for a work conference, but we were lucky that he had an early flight and he spent the majority of the day with Kris. After we all went to dinner downtown, we were in the car on the way home and got stopped by a train. Karmann immediately started to count the train cars - starting with 1 and she counted all the way to 20!!! She was a little stuck on the "teens" and kept saying fourteen or some version of "teen" until she said 20! We were all pretty impressed! So then I asked her to say the alphabet, and she recited the whole thing almost as clear as day! Kris and I were proud of our baby girl showing off to Uncle B! She's definitely becoming more articulate when she speaks, and she also understands commands and has a really great memory! She remembers where she puts things and goes back to find them sometimes a day or so later. She's not quite liking the potty training right now, though we really haven't been consistent, so I can't blame her. She's also not a big fan of taking a bath, until you get her in the water, then she has a blast. But telling her she's going to take a bath is when the challenge begins. One thing she does seem to enjoy, though, is brushing her teeth!!
She loves this show on Netflix called "Kipper" which is a British cartoon with 3 dogs and 2 pigs and is adorable. So now she watches that about as much as she watched Elmo. I am trying to limit her tv hours now, especially on the weekends. I notice such a different behavior when she's in front of a tv, so I am making a better effort to do other activities with her. She still loves her books and she loves to pretend she is reading them. Its pretty cute, too. Her other new fun thing is to go "inside" the covers on the bed and tickle my toes. We have a blast - and when Daddy is home too, she yells "Daddy! Daddy! Inside? Come inside!" And he better get his behind in there, or she'll keep yelling until he does! Then when we are all inside, its a big tickle and giggle fest!!
She is growing and changing so fast it seems these days. We are excited to get her room together at the new house, with her new kitchen, table and chairs, and artist easel, but I just know from that point, time is going to fly and before we know it she will be a teenager!! I hope there's some way we can take it all in and slow it down, though I look forward to it!

Happy New Year (a little late!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5nixCb_dNI

Happy New Year everyone! Hope the holidays were great too! Here's an update...post Karmann's 2nd birthday....

We left chilly Orlando and headed to snowy Illinois on the Wednesday before Christmas after work. I had feared a trip from hell with a two-year-old and an 18+ hour total drive, so I had plenty of snacks, juice, and toys and entertainment for her at arms length! We made it to Valdosta GA that night and had planned a night's stay in a hotel. The next day, we started up to Atlanta. Kris has always wanted to go to the Georgia Aquarium, and this was the perfect opportunity for a visit and a car break for Karmann. On the way up, for some reason, Karmann drank a lot of juice, ate a lot of snacks, and sure enough, threw it all up. It all happened so quickly, that I don't think she or I knew what went wrong! We kept driving though! I changed her shirt, wiped the carseat down, and carried on! She didn't have a fever or any other symptoms beside eating and drinking too much, so we arrived at the Aquarium and had a wonderful 3+ hours visiting all the exhibits. Karmann LOVED it! We took some great videos (see these links:

and of course she was exhausted after that, so we jumped back in the car and headed to Kris' sister's house in Nashville. We stayed the night there. The next day, Sarah and Charlie actually flew home to Nashville and then we caravaned up to Illinois.

And then we hit snow.... It was pretty bad. The roads weren't being plowed and it took us from around 2 until 6 pm to get about what should have taken 1.5 hours. And, yes, once we got on I-74 it was dark and about 6 inches of unplowed snow. I was scared to death, and Kris was doing an excellent job controlling the car and focusing on the road. Karmann was and ANGEL and sat and watched Elmo the entire time without one complaint or peep. At one point she even reached over and patted my shoulder as if to say, "its going to be okay Mommy, calm down!" It was much appreciated! So we finally got home to Kris' parents house safe and sound on Christmas Eve. Didn't make church, but I wasn't about to get back in that car and into that snow!

The holiday was so nice! We ended up putting Karmann to bed and the adults opened gifts that night. Karmann's great-grandma (a.k.a Nannie) was also there. She had left Danville around 9 am to get to Bloomington before the snow hit - and I am SO thankful she did! So the whole family was there which made the holiday extra special.

We spent the weekend at home, visiting with family and friends. Karmann had a blast playing with her cousins Amara (8) and Abby (9 months). We are looking forward to next year when Abby will be at Karmann's age and Karmann will be more playful with her. Regardless, they all got along and had a great time with all the aunts and uncles and especially Grammy and Poppa!

The trip home came too soon as usual. We headed back to Nashville, but headed to Indiana on the way down to visit my brother and his wife Delana. They were working, so we met up with them in Columbus. This is a town famous for its architecture, so we were excited to see them there. Again, it was a quick couple of hours visit, but it was great to see them and another car break for Karmann. We made it back to Nashville without any weather or other problems. The next day we decided we were going to leave early and try and make it back to Orlando in one day. We made it all the way to Lake City (about 3 hours north of Orlando) before Karmann had had it. She really didn’t have a huge breakdown, but we were all tired and hungry, so we stopped at Cracker Barrel for dinner around 5. She was an angel in the restaurant – loved playing with the little golf-tee game and she ate her whole dinner and off we went! Made it home that evening without any issues! I was shocked, but so so pleased that the whole trip went well (thank goodness!)

So…now that we are back in town, starting the new year….of course we all got colds from being up north. I got it the worst, but the daycare was closed that week between Christmas and New Years, so I didn’t have to go back to work right away. This also gave Kris and me some time to work on the house and get geared up for the finishing details. Though I’m still recovering from bronchitis or the worst cough I have ever had, things are making progress on the house. In the last three weeks, the deck railings are up; the counter tops are installed; sink and faucets installed; interior window trim complete; more floor is in; decisions on light fixtures are 50% complete; driveway is bid out; and hardware is picked out! Yeah! Still waiting on bathroom tile but should be in in the next couple of weeks. We are starting to see the light….and it is looking nice!

I am going to end here and update Karmann’s two-year check up details hopefully tomorrow. Good night!
