blow⋅out - noun*
Disclaimer: If you don't want to read about breastfeeding and pooping, do not read this entry!!
One new vocabulary word that has a whole new meaning - not in the dictionary definition above - is blowout. Karmann has been through a rocky last two weeks with eating and - well you know what. What goes in must come out. She has been having problems nursing by not sucking enough in so, again, we were starving her and didn't know it. She was really cranky like she was when she was jaundice two Fridays ago, and the weekend was a little rough. I thought she may have had a little stuffy nose, but when we called the Dr and put saline in her little nostrils and sucked them clean, she was clear. Plus, she hadn't pooped in almost a week! You would be cranky too...So that following Monday, I attended the Mother's TEA for breastfeeding moms, and she nursed, but only took about 20 ml total, which is less than an ounce, and she should be taking about 2.5 with her weight and age. So we decided to have another follow-up with the lactation consultant the next day. To make a long story short, she had only gained 5 oz. in the past 2 1/2 weeks, and she should have gained that in one week. So, the consultant observed her eating and determined that she doesn't suck hard enough - on my boobs or on the bottle. The consultant also recommended oral therapy to help her learn how to suck harder. So, we left there with the plan to fatten her up by nursing and supplementing 2 oz. after each feeding. I also called our Pediatrician to discuss what was happening and to see if he needed to see her. He said what we were doing was good and to definitely go to the oral therapy. In the mean time, the plan worked and she gained 3 oz. in two days (and pooped too)! So over the weekend, we kept doing that except at night, and I was pumping in between. We went back today and she gained 3 more ounces! Yippee! Plus, she ate 80 ml (almost 3 oz!!) while nursing her there. So she is improving already! Her "speech therapy" starts Wednesday, and we'll go from there. This breastfeeding is difficult! But I fully expect her to be talking in a week after all this is said and done!
At the same time all of this had been going on, we had Kris' birthday that we celebrated yesterday, and our great friends - considered family - Jerry & Sherry came fromPhoenix to visit to meet Karmann, and their new grand-niece and nephew twins Tyler and Caleigh. Jerry will be here for another week or so, but Sherry had to get back to Phoenix today to be back with her grandson, Asher. Karmann loved meeting them and they couldn't put her down either! We can't wait till we get out to AZ so Karmann can meet Asher!
Lots to get done this week, as Friday I go back to work part time in the afternoons. I anticipate a lot of adjusting and a transition period ahead. The latest photos - okay like 50 of the same photo - are up at the following link. Enjoy!

Holly, this entry was great. It brought back so many memories of Shane as a baby. Your memories of Karmann will stay with you for years also. Your humor and determination are really refreshing.
